Bamboo Matcha Spatula
Our 'chashaku' is handmade in Japan, in Nara prefecture, by Chikumeido, who have been making tea ceremony utensils for 24 generations. In Japanese tea ceremony, 'chashaku' is used to scoop the Matcha from its caddy. Examples originally introduced from China were made of ivory. Due to high the cost, Japanese 'chashaku' came to be made in bamboo. It was initially lacquered to make it more resistant, but tea master Sen Sōtan (17th century) decided to keep it natural. The original shape and coloration of the bamboo, together with the carver’s unique personality and taste, translate in the irregularities of each ‘chashaku’.
Our 'chashaku' is 'arigoshi 蟻腰’ style – which literally translates as ‘ant’s waist’. The node in the middle of the handle makes it resembles the waist of an ant. This form is said to have been invented by Sen no Rikyū in the 16th century, considered the founder of Japanese tea ceremony.
